The future of non-IT graduates amidst the booming IT sector

 

Organizations are rapidly increasing their technology adoption in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The demand for the tech force has shot up.

More companies are realising that digitization is the need of the hour. Several companies such as the grocery shopping company named Grofers have increased the pay of their tech workers by 33%.

Many tech workers fell sick in the deadly pandemic, but most of them have returned with more responsibilities.

Since the job responsibilities have increased, job vacancies have also risen. Companies are hiring workforce for tech departments in numbers. Some of the hirings are for new roles, such as edge computing and real-time data analytics.

According to the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), an industry body, India’s five largest companies are likely to hire 96,000 employees this year.

It indicates that the IT sector is booming. It is expected to grow even more since the pandemic has accelerated the pace of digitization by ten times.

Amidst all of this, one questions about the future of non-IT graduates. What would the industry look like for them? Would they be able to survive?

The answer is a big yes. In fact, with digitization, there are no longer straightforward jobs like data entry, but they have changed to more complex ones like customer relations.

Some of them are:

1 . Digital Marketing and Strategy

When was the last time you shopped at a physical store? With the emergence of online shopping and restrictions like lockdown, marketing has also digitized itself. Throughout the pandemic, many businesses managed to transition to remote work and understood the significance of digital marketing.

Digital Marketing strategies are used in the form of online ads, attractive copy, and SEOs. Even though there are a lot of SEO tools available for data analytics in the market, one needs a human being to decipher the data and formulate strategies accordingly.

Selling innovation is as important as creating innovation. The technology is of no use if it is unable to sell itself in the market.

Marketing has gone towards a new direction altogether and would revolutionize the work culture for the non-IT graduates.

2 . Customer Relations

When your package is not delivered to you at the right time, the first thing you do is call the customer care provider. This form of interaction with a live person in case of any grievance is necessary.

Artificial Intelligence has entered this space as well. Computerised robots are used to solve the grievances of customers. However, it is undesirable to do so.

Companies have realised this and have prioritised building relationships with customers. To do so, every company must have some representatives who act as the face of the company. This relationship-building activity can be witnessed at every level, be it a grocery shopping company or a giant accountant consultancy service provider. Non-IT graduates play a crucial role in the fast technologically driven world.

3 . Smart Managers

Tech graduates can easily build machines. But it is extremely difficult to find the right individuals for an organization. Management is the art and science of knowing what you want men to do and seeing that they do it effectively and efficiently. The task of finding the ideal set of the workforce for an organization acts as the base of the organization.

People management and organization development cannot be left in the hands of robots alone. Humans are needed to perform this job. Companies are going to need HRs, People management specialists and Training and Development staff to manage the tech people who invent machines and codes.

They act as the backbone of the tech industry.

4 . Graphic Design and Interface

Everything is accessible to people at one click. Companies have applications of their own. While much of the techno features go into building a platform like this, the graphics and interface is the department of non-tech individuals.

UI and UX design jobs are going to be the hottest jobs for non-tech students in the future. You need someone to guide the technology guys and help them decode the human mind.

Everything from deciding a colour scheme to setting up a user-friendly interface to deciding the content of the website or application is in the hands of the non-tech individuals.

The future looks bright for non-tech individuals. The tech industry has an everlasting demand for more workforce. With a surge gap between the demand and supply, one wonders if the IT sector willing to hire graduates from other backgrounds?

Recently, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple expressed his opinion that a 4-year degree in programming is not necessary to excel at coding. Many entrepreneurs have a similar view regarding this.

Degrees are now giving a false sense of illusion and protection to individuals. What is being taught at the university is most likely to become irrelevant in the future.

The solution to tackle this situation is to follow the path of upskilling and reskilling.

Any skill can be learned in a desired amount of time even if one has no professional degree in it. Programming is also included in it.

The number of IT jobs is increasing with the digital revolution. Keeping this in mind, companies like Google are focussing on employing individuals who possess the knowledge and not the degree.

Even IT graduates have to undergo a training period to excel at their job. This can be made possible by extending the duration of training for non-tech graduates and allowing them to enter the industry.

Nowadays, many platforms such as Coursera and Udemy offer coding, data analytics and other tech-related courses in the comfort of people.

“Over the past few years, however, it has become increasingly common for candidates from all academic streams to opt for some kind of technical certification and skilling courses to land jobs in the IT sector,” said Yeshab Giri, chief commercial officer – staffing and RT professionals, Randstad India for The Economic Times.

A shift towards a non-traditional education has taken place. People are continuously upskilling themselves and entering the industries with which they previously had no relations.

The IT sector will have to hire graduates that are not a part of the industry even if they had a choice. The rising gap in demand and supply would result in many non-IT graduates entering the field and excelling at their jobs.
